Netflix recently announced a new feature that allows you to download shows to your phone. This means you can watch the show even when you’re not connected to the internet. The thing is, Amazon users have been able to do this all along.
The internet is making a big deal about this new feature from Netflix – heck I even wrote about it. And there’s no doubt that offline viewing is a great feature, especially heading into the holiday travel season. However. IMHO, Netflix is finally catching up with something Amazon has been providing all along.
To download movies and shows from Amazon, you’ll first need the Amazon Videos app.
Here’s the download link from Amazon.
Another great thing about downloading a video from Amazon. Downloading is not limited to the shows you purchase. You can download any of the thousands of videos included for free with your Prime membership.
Once in the app, find a show that you want to take with you. Tap on it and you’ll be taken to the overview page.
If there are multiple episodes like my example, you’ll see them listed below the title area.
Each episode will have its own download icon next to it. Tap the icon to begin the download.
You can download a show at any point that you have internet connection. But if it were me, I would be connected to a stable wi-fi connection. It’ll download faster and you won’t accrue data charges from your cellular carrier.
So you’ve downloaded a few shows. You’re stuck in the airport next to some guy that … Ah, nevermind. It’s a bad enough situation without me reminding you of all the gruesome details.
In the Amazon Video app tap on the 3 lines menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Tap on Downloads
Tap on the thumbnail
Tap on Watch or Resume or the Play button icon next to the episode title.
You’ve finished the show and you need to free up some space. If your just coming back into Amazon Video then tap the 3 lines menu icon in the upper left corner, tap on Downloads, tap on the shows thumbnail.
In the episode list you’ll see a trashcan icon in place of the download icon.
Once you tap on the trashcan you’ll be prompted to confirm you want to remove this show from your device. Tap Ok.
So you see. Amazon Video viewers have been able to download shows and movies to their devices long before Netflix offered this feature. Now that you know how, you’ll never be stuck listening to that guy in the seat next to you drone on and on about his sciatica issue.
I would really appreciate it if you would help me get the word out about My Smartphone Tutor. All you have to do is share this post on any of your social networks. Thank you.
